Use Cuchara as the gateway
This page no longer treats Cuchara itself as a generic stargazing pin. The town is the useful geographic gateway. The actual source-supported overnight bases are the named Forest Service campgrounds farther west at Bear Lake and Blue Lake.
That distinction matters. A dark-looking road shoulder or an arbitrary point near town should not become an implied public observing site simply because the surrounding region is dark.
Bear Lake and Blue Lake are the night bases
The U.S. Forest Service manages Bear Lake and Blue Lake as developed recreation and camping areas in the Cuchara Valley. A registered campsite gives travelers a clear legal reason to remain overnight instead of relying on uncertain late-night parking.
Bear Lake and Blue Lake are mountain campgrounds, not dedicated telescope fields. Trees and surrounding terrain can limit horizons, so the exact campsite matters if you are bringing a telescope or trying to photograph a low object.

Access can change quickly
Hazardous trees, weather and seasonal operations have affected this recreation area in recent years. Check the current Forest Service status before committing to the night drive. Also verify fire restrictions, water availability and the exact campground opening dates for the season.
Why Cuchara still belongs
The point of this addition is not “Cuchara has dark skies.” It is that Cuchara provides a practical gateway into a darker Spanish Peaks mountain setting with named, managed overnight bases. That is a much more useful role in the guide than a vague town-center stargazing marker.
