Forest Service

The U.S. Forest Service describes Bear Lake Campground as “a developed campground with lake and stream fishing opportunities.” Blue Lake is also managed as a developed campground, with a non-motorized trail connecting the two lake areas.[1]

Forest Service status notices are especially important here: hazardous blown-down trees have caused campground, road and trail closures in recent seasons. Seasonal opening dates and services are also weather dependent.[1]

What that means for a night-sky trip

The agency does not currently market Bear Lake or Blue Lake as dedicated astronomy sites. Their value to this guide is the campground-based access in a mountain setting, not an official stargazing designation. Trees and steep surrounding horizons also mean the exact campsite can matter substantially for telescope views.[1]
