Colorado Stargazing Trail

The dunes “boast open views of the night sky over the otherworldly landscape.”[2]

The trail page emphasizes that Great Sand Dunes works under both dark and bright skies: moonlight reduces the number of visible stars but illuminates the dunefield, while summer and fall evening programs interpret astronomy and nocturnal ecology.[2]

National Park Service

“Summer night programs are a good way to experience and understand the night sky and nocturnal ecology.”[3]

NPS describes Great Sand Dunes as an International Dark Sky Park shaped by high elevation, dry air and low light pollution. Its guidance recommends planning around clear weather, sunset, moonrise and moonset; it also notes that outdoor areas are accessible at night and that bright moonlight can turn the dunefield itself into the main nighttime experience.[3]

For night safety, NPS advises carrying a light while minimizing white-light use, dressing for falling temperatures and checking weather and current conditions before entering the dunes after dark.[3]
