Route 5 branches from Black Canyon
Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the handoff. Route 3 reaches the canyon from Breckenridge and Old Snowmass; Route 5 turns southwest from there instead of continuing toward Lake City.
This branch trades the central Western Slope for the San Juan foothills, mesas and increasingly remote West End.
The route
Start at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, then head south toward Ridgway and nearby Top of the Pines. Continue west toward Norwood, then finish in Nucla & Naturita.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison → Ridgway → Top of the Pines → Norwood → Nucla & Naturita
Ridgway and Top of the Pines are two different dark-sky experiences
Ridgway is an International Dark Sky Community, designated in 2020. Nearby Top of the Pines is an International Dark Sky Park, designated in 2021, on a 175-acre recreation and open-space property outside town.[1][2]
That is why this guide treats them as one practical leg but not the same stop: Ridgway supplies the town base, while Top of the Pines is a separate dedicated dark-sky site with its own access and event rules.[1][2]
Norwood opens the mesa country
Norwood is an International Dark Sky Community, designated in 2019. DarkSky International describes the community as remote and sparsely populated, with documented dark-sky monitoring supporting its designation.[3]
The route uses Norwood as the transition from the San Juan foothills into broader mesa country before the final West End leg.[3]
Finish in Nucla and Naturita
Nucla and Naturita received a joint International Dark Sky Community designation in 2021. Their designation makes the West End a formal dark-sky destination rather than simply the remote end of this route.[4]
Services and distances still matter after dark, so use the current place page to choose the actual observing or overnight location instead of treating the community name as a parking instruction.[4]
Keep the drive realistic
This route should be treated as a multi-night western Colorado trip, not a single-night checklist. A clear night at one stop is worth more than racing through several destinations after sunset.
