Route 5 branches from Black Canyon

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the handoff. Route 3 reaches the canyon from Breckenridge and Old Snowmass; Route 5 turns southwest from there instead of continuing toward Lake City.

This branch trades the central Western Slope for the San Juan foothills, mesas and increasingly remote West End.

The route

Start at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, then head south toward Ridgway.

Treat Ridgway and Top of the Pines as the same general leg of the trip rather than two distant destinations. Ridgway gives you the town and services; Top of the Pines gives you a dedicated dark-sky setting nearby.

Continue west toward Norwood, then finish in Nucla & Naturita.

Ridgway / Top of the Pines

This is the natural reset point after Black Canyon. Ridgway provides fuel, food and lodging, while Top of the Pines gives the route a more deliberate night-sky destination in the same broader San Juan country.

If a current astronomy program or event is running at either stop, build the night around that rather than treating both as mandatory checkboxes.

Norwood opens the mesa country

West of the San Juans, the landscape changes again. Norwood sits on broad mesa country with a very different horizon from Black Canyon or Ridgway.

That change in landscape is part of why the route works: canyon rim, mountain foothills, open mesa, then the sparse West End.

Finish in Nucla & Naturita

Nucla and Naturita make a logical western endpoint because the road has moved into one of the more remote inhabited corners of Colorado.

Services are thinner here, distances matter more after dark, and the surrounding country can feel much farther from the resort-and-highway version of western Colorado.

Keep the drive realistic

This route should be treated as a multi-night western Colorado trip, not a single-night checklist. A clear night at one stop is worth more than racing through several destinations after sunset.
