Use Durango as the launch if it fits your trip, then let Durango / Cortez become the practical base once you are in the region. These are the hosted nights connected to that road.
Getting into the region
Use Durango as the main hub. Cortez is the better base for Mesa Verde and Hovenweep, while Pagosa Springs makes sense for Chimney Rock. Denver may be where a statewide trip began, but by the time you reach the Four Corners it should no longer be organizing the route.
