Colorado Stargazing Trail
The Colorado Tourism Office describes Paonia as a community sheltered by the West Elk Mountains, which help reduce surrounding light. The trail recommends pairing a visit with a local dark-sky event or using a campsite at nearby Paonia State Park for independent stargazing.[2]
Dark Skies Paonia
Dark Skies Paonia describes its work as reducing light pollution and bringing back the night.[3]
The organization says Paonia is an International Dark Sky Community, provides local lighting and stargazing guidance and maintains an events page for astronomy and dark-sky programming. Its current site also describes a community observatory in planning and development.[3]
Paonia State Park: the nearby overnight option
Paonia State Park is now folded into this page rather than treated as a second stargazing destination. The distinction remains important: the Town of Paonia holds the International Dark Sky Community designation; the state park is a separate property nearby.[4][5]
Colorado Parks and Wildlife lists ordinary park hours as 5am–10pm. The park has 20 campsites and requires campground reservations. Current CPW information describes the campground as seasonal, generally operating May 1 through September 30, with the park closed for the winter period beginning October 1.[4][5]
For a traveler who wants to remain out after ordinary day-use hours, a reserved campsite is the clearest source-supported model. Do not assume Paonia's community certification changes the state park's access rules.[4][5]
Plan the Paonia night
Use the town and Dark Skies Paonia for the community side of the experience: lighting stewardship, local events and the certified Dark Sky Community context. Use Paonia State Park only when its seasonal campground works for your itinerary, and check CPW immediately before travel for closures, reservations and services.[4][5]
