Use Breckenridge as the launch if it fits your trip, then let Gunnison / Montrose, with Grand Junction for the far west become the practical base once you are in the region. These are the hosted nights connected to that road.
Getting into the region
Breckenridge is the eastern handoff into this region. From there, Gunnison and Montrose are the better working hubs for Black Canyon and the central Western Slope; Grand Junction takes over for the far west, Aspen serves the Roaring Fork branch, and Lake City and Creede become the useful edges for the remote Snow Mesa / Colorado Trail high country. Aspen Mountain Sundeck and Aspen Stargazing are represented in Events rather than as permanent place pins.

AstroTours.org offers mobile private telescope programs across Colorado, so a guided night may be possible near almost any stop in this guide even when there is no fixed public program there.
Secure the venue first. Private property, National Park Service sites, Tribal lands, resorts, campgrounds and other managed locations may require express permission, a commercial-use permit or authorization, or may not allow an outside private program at all. Use a place where the landowner or manager has specifically approved the tour, such as approved lodging, a campsite, an event venue or another suitable observing site nearby.
