Colorado Parks and Wildlife says Staunton is open to campers year-round and provides 25 walk-in campsites. That makes it a legitimate camping option near Denver, but the current source does not establish a standing astronomy program, dedicated telescope area or other night-sky feature strong enough to justify its own statewide stargazing stop.[2]

The walk-in format and forested terrain also make it less useful for telescope setups than the original addition implied.[2]

What the defunct tag means here

DEFUNCT / CAMPING-ONLY FIT means Staunton was removed from the active stargazing directory because generic overnight camping is not, by itself, enough to qualify. The state park remains open.[2]
