Golden Gate Canyon State Park is not closed. It is archived because the original guide entry was being carried primarily by occasional astronomy events.[2]
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has used Reverend's Ridge and Panorama Point for public star parties with astronomers. Those are legitimate programs, but a scheduled star party belongs in the Events layer rather than turning the whole state park into a permanent astronomy destination.[2]
The astronomy history is still useful
For a 2026 star party, the program began at the Reverend's Ridge Campground Amphitheater and moved after dark to Panorama Point for telescope viewing. That tells visitors where CPW has intentionally staged astronomy, but it does not establish unrestricted or all-night astronomy access across the park.[2]
Existing event records remain the right place to preserve specific star-party information.[2]
What the defunct tag means here
DEFUNCT / EVENT-ONLY FIT means the park did not meet the guide's stricter standard for a standalone stargazing place. The park itself remains active, and any future astronomy program can still appear in Events.[2]
